Desktops & Towers

Desktop and tower computers are two different styles of computer case that use desk space in varying ways. Desktop computers are designed to lay flat on the desk, while towers stand upright.
Most modern computers use one of the three sizes of tower case. Home Theater PC or server computer cases often use a desktop configuration

The smallest type of tower computer case is the mini-tower. This type of case typically measures less than 300cm in height and is designed to conserve desk space.
Although the small size of this type of case makes them convenient for users with limited desk space, the size limitations of the case often limit the upgrade potential of mini-tower computers.

Most mini-tower cases only support one to two internal drive bays, severely limiting their data storage capacity.
Mini-tower computers are often restricted to using less powerful low-profile expansion due to the limited space within the case.
These space limitations often make mini-tower computers difficult to work on and significantly reduce their cooling capacity compared to larger cases with similar equipment.

  Hybrid Systems

This type of system construction is the pairing of proven performance parts for maximum performance and with a specific system use in mind.
An examples, a system with a goal of being a C.A.D (Computer Aided Drawing) system will require a different set of performance parts to a high end gaming system or a bitcoin mining computer.
Even thou a gaming system has on paper the highest requirements of any PC’s a Hybrid system may require a CPU with more cores, a GPU with more ray tracing cores or even multi graphic cards.

  Media Home Theatre Systems

The typical PC case would be a huge eye sore in a home theater room. Media/HTPC styled cases are available and are designed to match audio/video gear in a home theater room.
A Media style PC can differ to your standard PC as the use of a 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray rom is a common practice this paired with a good low profile or in some cases a full size video card will give you the best picture available.
Running Ethernet cables from a router to a HTPC is ideal, but sometimes long cable runs are not an option. Ethernet connection may not be available in the family room or home theatre room.

Using Wireless and Bluetooth connection can be utilised in this application as the modern TV's are designed to pair with the media devices and access the internet.
In some cases the addition of a 7.1 sound card is also a very good option although the selection of a suitable motherboard can also be a better option.
Many motherboard these days come with 7.1 audio as standard on the board this reduces the size and depending on the media case being used in this application may be the only option.

  High Performance Workstations

These days, the best workstations are around the same size as normal PCs, and offer high quality designs, without sacrificing pure power and performance.
Some, such slimline all-in-one PCs that offer brilliant performance whilst not taking up loads of room in your office.
The best workstations can handle any application you throw at it, and they are useful tools.

  • Designers
  • Engineers
  • Computer Aided Drawing
  • Financial Analysts
  • Researchers

And many other application, too many to list.
Workstation touch every industry and we all rely on these PC’s on a daily bases.

  Laptops Notebooks & Tables

In this modern age of portable computers, scientists have developed new alternatives and up-graded new cutting-edge features to the standard desktop computers which were invented in the preceding century.
As a result, a lot of ‘on the move’ computers have popped up in the market today, making it very confusing for individuals to decide where exactly to invest their money in. Tablets and Notebooks are one amongst these popular market inventions.

The difference between a tablet and a notebook is that tablets are the climax of mobile technology since they are compact, lightweight, easily portable, and very flexible as they consist of a touch-sensitive screen rather than a manual keyboard which generally takes up a lot of space in most Notebooks whereas a Notebook is commonly identified as a mobile personal computer which represents considerable progress in functionality, power, and performance and also carries out all the functions accessible on a desktop in a light, portable and compact manner.

A tablet is a compact, elegant type of computer which efficiently helps people in fulfilling their general needs whereas a Notebook, which can also be interchanged with the term laptop, is primarily a computer that is compressed into a tiny package. When compared, a tablet does not have the same functionality and processing power a Notebook has and a Notebook doesn’t have the same portability and virtual keyboard feature the tablet has.

  System Upgrades

First off you can never have the latest PC parts! This is because the computer industry moves to fast to stay on top of the cutting edge and even if you are lucky enough to know someone in R&D (research and development) in one of the leading tech companies they have competitors that are also developing the next new latest tech.

This being said there is a level of performance that we all can achieve with our personal computers that is at the pointy end of the tech industry and unlike years of past this has become very affordable as I stated the tech industry moves so fast the last generation of technology is reduced in price to make way for the new product and it's new pricing.

I personally with my own servers, workstation, laptops and mobile devices try to stay in the sweet spot of technology. This is not the latest generation, but one to two generation back. This provides a buffer to give you factory warranty, software and hardware support and very high end performance on parts that have proven quality and reliability in a fast moving industry.

Service & Repairs

There are many factors that can course issues with your PC and some of these can be reduced with maintenance. Heat, dust, liquid, power, impact and even insects and animals all can kill your PC. With regular maintenance and preventive action these risks can be minimised or eliminated.

Issues needing repair can be devised in to two main areas, Software and Hardware. This sound straight forward but they can cross over when diagnosing a PC’s problem and the problem you thought was a hardware problem turns out to be caused by a software issue and vise verse.

Please see the images below. Just by looking, this seems straightforward.

  1. Blue screen of death, Software problem
  2. Overheating, Hardware problem
  3. Dust, Hardware problem

Right?

  1. Could be caused from both software or hardware
  2. This is a little extreme but you get the idea. This obviously is overheating, but this also could be caused from both a software or hardware issue
  3. Well, I can't think of any reason this could be anything but a hardware issue, but this could have been prevented by filters, regular services and don't leave your case open in the desert in a dust storm!
